RHETORIC: THE ART OF REDEMPTION OR THE MEANS OF MANIPULATION (CONTEMPORANE'S LOOK)

The history of oratory is from antiquity. Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle believed that a citizen should serve the public good and the state with all his virtues and skills. He called the ability to speak beautifully the second dignity of a person (after physical training). An ancient scholar believed that a good speaker could be successful in any sphere of public or political activity. Was the great Greek right? Is this position relevant today? What is the place of rhetoric in modern education? Do we need oratorical skills for specialists in the "non-humanitarian" sphere and how do modern mass media use the rhetoric? These and other issues were discussed at the scientific student's seminar in the some groups of 1 course of ESC IASA. The discussion was lively. Students expressed their attitude to the topics, they argued their opinions, argued, brought interesting examples. The discussion demonstrated the ambiguous attitude of young people towards practical rhetoric.
