The Department of Ukrainian Language, Literature and Culture celebrates the Day of the Embroidered Shirt. The holiday is celebrated for 15 years. Employees of the Denisenko Scientific and Technical Library and teachers of our department invited PhD, director of the Center of Folklore and Ethnography of the Institute of Philology of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, assistant of the Department of Folklore Volodymyr Shchybra. The scientist gave an interesting lecture on the history and characteristics of the embroidered shirt. He told about different types of embroidery, regional differences in ornament, features of embroidery color of Ukrainian shirts. The scientist thinks that the term "vyshyvanka" is incorrect, because there are other elements of embroidered clothing. It is more correct to use the term "embroidered shirt".

At the beginning of the lecture, a retrospective of Ukrainian embroidery and its connection with the embroidery of other nations of the world was shown. The researcher noted that Ukraine can not boast of shirts older than the XVІІІ century. Many valuable clothing artifacts were destroyed during revolutions, wars, and famines, unfortunately.

Mr. Volodymyr told about the peculiarities of the shirt cut, the place of embroidery on clothes. He answered questions from listeners, most of whom are students of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering. There were questions about the role of embroidered fragments as magical symbols. The ornament was characteristic of each area. It was impossible to wear clothes with other, "foreign" ornaments. The answer was interesting to the question about children's shirts, about the dependence of embroidery (brightness, density and ornament) on the age of the person who wore the clothes.

The lecture was extremely informative, contributed to the national-patriotic education and popularization of Ukrainian culture among technical youth.
