Gerasymchuk V.A. Numerals in Ukrainian idioms
The article presents a historical and cultural discourse on the function of numerals in speech of Ukrainians. It traces the formation of the counting in opposition, correlation between single and plural, specific and general points. The paper explicates semantics, frequency of usage, and mental and semantic features of the numerals, particularly in idioms.
It emphasizes that Ukrainian idioms, proverbs, sayings and set phrases reflect all the semantic conflicts of the numerals rising. Some of them, e.g. three, seven, hundred, were favorite ones and were used more frequently and possessed different meanings, while the others like six, eight, nine occurred rarely and were poorer semantically.
