The article reveals different theories of the origin of language. The author dwells on the theory of onomatopoeia that possessed unique properties and its own ways of expression in each language. Language of the nature is retrospectively analyzed on basis of onomatopoeic vocabulary of animals, birds, etc. As a result the existence and functioning of such lexicon in modern language is actualized. The attention is paid to its usage in direct and indirect meaning. The expressive and emotional value of colloquial and artistic speech is pointed out.
